Tinker vs. Des Moines

I was surprised at how much attention the actions of two high school students and a middle schooler got in this case. I believe that what was said in the reading is true, that if someone wants to "fight" for a case without disrupting or causing to much of a sense then they have all the right to do what they want. An example would be wearing black armbands like the students did back in the early 70's. This act wasn't a violent demonstration or even a disruptive one but the school felt the need to punish these kids for doing what they saw as a freedom of there beliefs. An example we do at CA is the day of silence that is simliar to the black armbands. the day of silence is when a group of kids elects not to speak all day in an effort to bring forward the rights of Gay people in america. to show respect to the ones that were bullied to the point of taking their own life's. In some ways this is even more disruptive then the armbands themselves.

Thoughts on FOS and Canada's ban on lying

I think that freedom of speech is essential to a successful country and society in general. When there is a restriction on a thing that almost every human can do then there is no real way to restrain it. I think that the only way that anyone can try and silence a person's right to speak is to help prevent chaos and violence. The one example that comes to mind is yelling fire in a crowed theater, this act needs to be punished because it can and will insight fear and chaos among the people near the person yelling fire.

I agree and disagree with this article about canada's ban on lying in the news. I think that the news needs to be unfiltered and must inform the listener/reader of current events, but at the same time all the news dosent need to be told to the general public. If there are thirty cyber attacks on the CIA's mainframe and and they were all fended off, it would cause people to get paranoid or scared that one time the attack will end up happening and cripple the USA. So i agree that the news needs to be told and not changed to fit the "ideal views" of the people giving the news, but all the news doesn't need to be told because some of that news could cause fear and chaos in the public which could lead to riots and civil unrest.

there are many differences in paper media and electronic media. the one that sticks out to me is the way we can access both types. when you want to go read a paper or get a magazine you have to go out and get a newspaper, but with electronic media it is there with a few pushes of the button. i believe that in the not so distance future, maybe the next 200 years, there wont be a need to print out newspapers or magazines because of the ever growing ease and accessibility of the internet. it is only logical that as we get more and more into technology and less and less into actually going to get a book, that the change would be made. i can speak for personal experience with this issue. this year we had the option of getting a book in the hard, paper copy or getting it in the digital copy. now i have never seen this before, but i was amazed that i could just access a book without the book being right there. so as electronic media grows and evolves the need for book will steadily decrease until there isn't a need for them and they are all put onto the internet in electronic public libraries. this future isn't every far away, many of the older generations are lost when it comes to electronic media and ways to use the internet, so as they die out, then the newer generations, such as my own, will prevail and become the first generation to go completely digital.

how does technology affect the way information is shared?

technology is a key tool in the sharing of information. starting with the invention of stone carving an idea or message and sending it with someone to be spread where that person goes. when letters came into play and that turned the world upside down. it was so much more efficient to just send a letter with something written on it across vast distances and get the message across. but the modern use of technology is a tool for which humans dont know every way to use. for example, the use of facebook and twitter are great ways to share information with family and friends but it also is a double edged sword. what i mean by that is even though technology is a great way to send information across the planet it is also an even better way to receive and read information. an example that i am familiar with is posting a picture of yourself that is not appropriate and having a college admissions person see it or a college coach and end up losing that opportunity. technology is a great tool to spread one persons ideas and thoughts to the rest of the globe but always be mind full of what you put on the internet because it could come back and huant you.
